The references given at the back are well worth a read, and as valuable an exercise as the novel itself. Zinzi December hat ein Faultier. Zinzi has a sloth and the ability to find lost things — keys, wallets, people. The writing was pretty typical: She disables Mark–and not only does it turn out he’s entirely unnecessary to the bsukes, his compatriots in crime don’t even go looking for him? For one thing, the South African setting is very interesting to those of us who are not from that country.
No explanation of ciy damn thing, not just limited to exactly how Zinzi had earned her sloth. While I’m not usually a big fan of urban fantasy, I really enjoy the writing style of Lauren Beukesand loved her other novel Moxyland. Zoo City is a standalone novel set in a fictional Johannesburg, South Africa. This is also where the story stops making a laufen of sense. The plot was okay but had some holes, some unanswered questions, some predictable plot twists, and a less-than satisfactory ending. I was seduced by the writing while I was reading it, and it wasn’t until after I finished that I started lajren how many problems I had with it. Rezension auch auf http: Two things about this story that also stands out beukss is the nail-biting suspense at the pinnacle of the finale and what a magnificent finale!
As I owned this book, I thought I might as well read it. That’s not to say it isn’t an interesting mystery: With her shavi she has the ability to find lost things, screwed up pop stars and way too laure dead people.

But this is a little bleak, even for me. It was sickening and infuriating not only for what it was, but because Beukes did an amazing job in showing how easy it was for Zinzi and her boss to take advantage of innocents. The story gets a little bit choppy towards the end, and while I liked the fake laauren articles and academic essays describing the nature and history of the “animalled,” it felt a bit like filler in places.
While she spent four years working on MoxylandZoo City took just over a year to complete. I really loved the whole concept of the animals lwuren Zoo City, it completely drew me in right from the beginning.
She’s an excellent social hacker. When her elderly client turns up murdered, her financial straits force her to take on a less preferred type of case, that of a missing person.
Don’t be put off by my 3 Star rating – it’s really more of a 3.

This book is a serious novel that happens to be urban fantasy.
I guess you can say she has some personal growth, but I didn’t see it; she falls off the wagon on drugs, beu,es alcohol. The “animalled” are also unable, it seems, to help liking and feeling affection for their animals. But I am led to render a 3. Views Read Edit View history.
One of my favourite elements to this novel is Beukes’ incorporation of local language and pop culture. Zinzi is roped into tracking down the missing half of a Bieber-eqsue pop group; not surprisingly, murder, mayhem, and zoo nefarious record producer are involved. There are plenty of bodies scattered about. And then the ending happened. May 17, The Captain rated it really liked it Shelves: Loading comments… Trouble loading?
The book picked me up and carried me along until three-quarters of the way through, when it promptly dropped me and went off to lose its way. This book drew me in from the very first page. Perhaps it’s the concrete manifestation of a southern African belief about straying spirits.
