Compared to current historical romances, The Windflower may seem old-fashioned, overly florid, or too dramatic. She was very frustrating, the Mary Sue of all Mary Sues, making one windfolwer blunder after another that not only put her but put others in terrible life and death situations and all the male characters just thought it made her even more cute and loveable.

This was probably the first romance I read that acknowledged some of the darker sides of life in the 19th century – and it really adds depth to how those characters want to protect Merry heroine and how they sometimes fail. Either you believe she’s innocent or you don’t.
