In defiance of genre, Silone weaves a heavy tapestry from threads of fable, philosophy, morality play, and political subterfuge. Thanks for telling us about the problem. In one incident, Spina scratches revolutionary phrases on a village wall, ivnazio — we learn just in passing — two village boys are accused and probably punished for the crime.
By the end you’re left wondering if the book’s true hero is not Spina, but Zabaglione, a man who is has conserved his resources to do the rebuilding when Fascism is finally gone. Full of tension and surprises.
