It feels sharper or more satirical underneath that outwardly ditsy surface. It says a lot that, according to the introduction, when the author James Joyce was losing bloondes eyesight and could read very little, the serialization of this book in Harpers Bazaar is one of the few things he read. It blonds a huge seller at the time, one of those books that appeal to all. Newsstand sales of Harper’s doubled, tripled and quadrupled. Paul Bryant who took an interest in me and wanted to help me improve my mind.
In this delightfully droll and witty looss, Lorelei Lee’s wild antics, unique outlook, and imaginative way with language shine. Edith Wharton, probably tongue in cheek, hailed it as “the great American novel”.
