I have a few Forkner textbooks.
There is a tiny bit of positional information, shrothand you don’t need lines to write on; the positions show relative to the existing letters just fine. While consonants are written phonetically, vowels generally reflect their original spelling. It takes a lot more strokes per sound, but fewer than speedwriting. It sacrifices speed a little, I’m sure, in order to gain better legibility to me at least.

The way Forkner represents vowels may be unique among alphabetic systems. It uses only alphabetic characters — no symbols shorthznd all. I do remember that there was one stroke in Forkner that looked much like the Gregg “gay” stroke. It has a speed potential of about wpm, I’ve been told.

I write it 40wpm neatly, managed to get a passage up to 70wpm last week with drill.
When I was doing an hour a day, 15 minutes of that period was spent reading each group of outlines until I could decipher each outline immediately.

Err, thats while it’s an easy system in relation…blah blah. I’m really torn about pursuing it any more.
As an aside, it’s my understanding that Pitman New Era is the form of choice for court reporting in India. How does it compare with Forkner, Speedwriting, etc.? There are fewer than 80 principles, of shorthajd only about 50 are absolutely required; the rest are prefixes and suffixes which can be spelled out.
I just don’t know if Forkner or any other alpha system foekner up to the task. Yes, George, I agree with you that spending some time each day would eventually lead to better reading fluency.
