I have had it for a while and just got around to reading it. But though she is very much like her mother in temperament, she rejects her mom’s desire to adopt American values and succeed economically. Not long after I began reading this book, I wondered why in the world I hadn’t read it sooner and why I knew nothing about it when I was a teenager. I read this a long time ago, just entering it now. Granted it is a different time period, but it is still “here”, and it is a very real feeling book.

Then something happened, and all of a sudden the story, its characters, and everything else just I thought it was fascinating to get a glimpse of the under-explored immigrant exp This book was a bit hard for me to get into at first I didn’t know what to expect exactly, and the story was a little slow for me as a result of that in the beginningbut once it started drawing me in, there was no putting it down.

Like other immigrants from the West Indies, the Boyces brownstnes to someday buy a house as the ultimate status symbol that they have made it in America. Out of distrust, and conflicted emotions regarding assimilation Selina and others resisted and declined the efforts to pool money for loans, scholarships.
Years ago, they also had a baby boy who died, and Selina always feels that her mother wishes Selina were her son. I think I actually fell asleep on the train ride home at one point, while trying to read the start, heh.
Marshall does not give a clear-cut answer, exploring both the strengths and the weaknesses of all the characters and the choices they make. Beryl confides to Selina that she has started menstruating.
