It does a good job of telling the story of how we got here, but doesn’t really want to address the “why” question, despite exuding a boundless optimism that the direction we’re going is “right”.

I took that long, not because it isn’t interesting, but because it is. What evidence we have, especially here in Africa, indeed points in that direction, but it is sparse. We are not the center of the universe, nor was the universe designed for us. A must for anybody who needs a Brilliant.

Bronowski aims to show how bronowzki, once freed from the constraints of instinct, used a combination of logic and imagination to achieve ever-deeper conceptions of our place in the universe. The reason why I’m reviewing it is because there are numerous errors in the first chapter that make this a problematic read.

But, as the chapter titles suggest, the book is not so much concerned with presenting up-to-date facts as with creating “a philosophy for the twentieth century which shall be all of one piece” from the Foreword.
They feel pretty pedantic and straightforward, and there wasn’t much I didn’t find familiar. Self-knowledge, at last bringing together the experience of the arts and the explanations of science, waits ahead of us. What is this human spirit? I immediately went out and bought the companion book to the series and read it straight through. And the mistakes that would not be blamed on th I did not finish this book so I won’t officially count it in my own stats as read.
