As far as a novel goes, Broken April is a bit uneven. His first published novel – at 27 – was The General of the Dead Armyabout an Italian general sent to Albania to repatriate the bones of his soldiers killed during the war.
He has just 30 days to live during a stay of execution also laid down in the lawsbefore the family of his victim will in turn come after him. Traditional law is a bitch, gentle reader. They like horrors, they like ghosts and witches and magicians.
He has made his name by works in which he waxed lyrical about the highlands, the peasants, and the Kanun. So he takes his young, beautiful, and impressionable wife Diana to the highlands on their kadre. As it turns out, it’s Albania between the two World Wars but there are no clues. He thinks the Kanun is a romantic relic of Albanian history, majestic and legendary.
