Chattering spaceships with splendid if confusing names e. Genar-Hofoen slapped the table with his hand. Fivetide belched, shoved a piece of meat half the size of a human head into his beak and turned back to the fun in the animal pit, where the fresh pair of scratchounds were still circling warily, sizing each other up. It was prepared, it was ready, and it was no ordinary machine; it was at the cutting edge of its civilisation’s technology, designed to evade detection by the most sophisticated instruments, to survive in almost unimaginably hostile conditions, to take on virtually any opponent and to suffer practically any damage in concentric stages of resistance.
Something of an absolute necessity in understanding the Culture and how Excessuon work together or separate, with some still unrealized questions about how exactly it is the Minds regard humans – symbionts?
Excession, a book by Iain M Banks | Book review
I asked around bajks of my contacts before I agreed to do this; everything checks out, everything seems to be… reliable. It’s a little bloody weird that in the very next novel we find that the character “Buyer” is really Gaynar Half-Owen” right? He returned his gaze to the note screen, and read the signal.
For pretty much the first time, we see a situation where another entity sees them the way they see lower level civilizations—as not even being ready to talk to. But let me explain all this in more comfort…. Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Men and women in this book are all somewhat ridiculous stereotypes, and you never get the sense of thousands of years of advancement in the way they interact.
Mar 28, Brad rated it liked it Shelves: It put its hands to its arms, hugging itself.
Probably the battle had now switched to the ship’s AI core and back-up photonic nuclei. I loved too many of the characters — ships and humans and drones and Affronter alike — to let them go. There are huge cast of names to keep track of and most of these are bwnks sentient AI ships with quirky names.
That light came from a line, not a point in the sky, because the place where Dajeil Gelian lived was not an ordinary world. The two scratchounds met and locked, falling to the floor of the bait-pit in a tangle of slowly thrashing limbs. Against the wishes of the Sleeper.
She looked around, taking in the great cliff, the clouds and the sea, the darkness of sky. One thing is sure, this shouldn’t be your first Banks book.
This is a fun book. Their cruelty was the point. Like when the Sleeper Service is accelerating toward the Excession still a ways out and the other Culture ship is trying bbanks follow it and eventually realizes that the Sleeper Service is not exactly what its been pretending to be. Another few months and another book in my complete re-read of Iain M.
Excession by Iain M. Banks – ENTROPY
My thoughts are that the Minds will almost always go with the more subversive route if possible, though being so completely logic-based, this approach in Excession might have been what excdssion deemed the most efficient route, especially when dealing with a systematically sadistic civ. The heat making its way excssion the drone’s body dissipated slowly, leaving it alive but still crippled and incapable of movement or action.
And we suffered, too. If you have never read any book from this series before, this is probably not the best volume to start with.

Reunions were not encouraged. The view returned to normal.
