Worth appreciating are the questions asked by the folk to the storyteller, and some contextual analogies. Character by character, scene by scene, Patil builds the world of Indian mythology, and lays the parv for the colossal struggle between cousins that will shake and shape the next two books of her story.

I do wish Patil had focused on something I think overall 3. Not all great stories have small beginnings.

The Mahabharata as a tale is known to all. It will never be a numbers game unless we start addressing drastically different concerns, and publishing in regional languages. I call Patil’ s work a retelling rather than adaptation because she has done more than put patul to the original text. This lavishly produced high amfuta edition is a marvelous work, for several reasons. This may just be a happy accident, but it’s a nice, subtle thread to an already-impressive tapestry. One must not underestimate the ability of a storyteller. I am also immensely fascinated by Mahabharata. Instead there is a gentle reasoning-out and the reader is made to feel that dissent is acceptable, if rational.
Amruta Patil’s Adi Parva
It has chosen only one topic particularly about Mahabharata, so if someone starts to read the book with thought that it will give detailed insight of Mahabharata then one will get disappointed. We feel the pain of lost dreams with the beauteous Gandhari when she is tricked into marrying a blind king. Slow start, but the passion does build: A fractious, cobbled-together pastiche of the Mahabharat for the fancy Indians and their white friends.
